For much of my life, I equated unwavering discipline and productivity with success and value. I believed resting meant laziness, so I pushed myself constantly, striving for perfection and extraordinary results.
I performed exceptionally, rarely pausing, even when exhausted. If I found a tiny gap in my schedule, it became my brief holiday, often spent sick and bedridden. When plans changed, I adjusted, postponing my own recovery. If breaks vanished entirely, my body forced me to stop, sometimes through sudden incidents. I never slowed down voluntarily or recognized warning signs.
This pattern persisted even as I changed my lifestyle: I improved my diet, started running with a trainer, and still pursued perfection. Despite not being naturally gifted at running, I followed every plan strictly while working and studying full-time. My trainer shared my mindset: rest meant laziness and plans had to be executed perfectly. Through discipline, I lost 35 kg (77 pounds) and changed my life.
But with time, injuries held me back and running lost its joy. It became another goal to master. Fear lingered: if I rested, I’d become lazy and gain the weight back. I worried I’d have to start over.
Eventually, I switched to online training. The machine didn’t judge or show disappointment if I skipped a session, and that mattered more than I realized.
I still needed a goal, so I applied for my fifth marathon. For the first time, I stepped out after 23 km. I gave up. It was tough, but ultimately the right decision.
That turning point led me to redefine my goals. I focused on improving my physical condition and, most importantly, rediscovering the joy of running. I trusted my discipline and allowed myself more freedom. I began listening to my body, permitting bad days and skipped workouts, but giving my best when ready, even if the tempo seemed “insane.”
The results spoke for themselves: my performance improved, injuries disappeared, I lost more weight, and my figure became even leaner as I approach 40. Most importantly, running is fun again. Now, the goal isn’t a specific race but the pursuit of well-being, enjoyment, and growth. I may sign up for another race someday, but it’s no longer my focus.
If you relate to my story, remember: True discipline isn’t just relentless striving, it’s knowing when to pause, listen, and adapt. Enjoyment and sustainability matter as much as progress. Whether you’re chasing ambitious goals as a runner, a student, or anyone else, lasting success comes from balance, not perfection. Let yourself rest, embrace the journey, and give yourself permission to evolve. That’s the heart of coaching and real transformation.
