When people hear that I call myself a hardcore optimist, they often imagine someone who believes life is sunshine, glitter, and happy endings.
That’s not what I mean at all.
For me, optimism is not about denying reality. It is about facing reality and still believing that something meaningful can come out of it.
Optimism, for me, is the discipline of asking better questions. When life unfolds according to plan, optimism is easy. But when life deviates from the script, that is where optimism becomes a conscious choice. Instead of begging life: “Why is this happening to me?”, I ask:
What can I learn from this?
What is this situation trying to teach me?
What strength is being developed here?
Let me be honest: optimism does not mean smiling through pain. Sometimes it looks like clenched jaws, determination, and stubborn persistence. It means walking through difficulty step by step, trusting that clarity will come later. Often the lessons only reveal themselves in hindsight.
So why do I call it “hardcore” optimism?
Because optimism becomes truly powerful when you practice it without proof. I spent more than three decades in environments that were deeply toxic. At the time, I had no real example that life could be different. And yet, at some point I made a decision: I would step out of the known world, even without certainty that something better existed. It felt like jumping into a bottomless abyss, trusting that somehow, I would grow wings on the way down. That leap required courage, curiosity, and an enormous amount of self-trust.
Optimism is also believing in the possibility of change. Things rarely get better by staying exactly as they were. Change however involves risk. And sometimes the first attempt doesn’t work. But optimism is what helps us stand up again and try a second time. And a third. And a fourth. And...
For me, hardcore optimism means:
Courage to question what feels “normal”
Curiosity about what life is trying to teach
Self-trust to take steps into the unknown
Resilience to stand up again after falling
And along this journey many remarkable things happen: You gain deeper self-awareness. Stronger confidence. More compassion for yourself and others. And slowly, step by step, a life that feels beautiful and truly your own.
This philosophy is also at the heart of my coaching work. Many people sense that something in their life no longer fits, but they don’t yet know what the next step could be. Sometimes all it takes is a space to reflect, ask better questions, and rediscover the courage that is already there. That is exactly the space I aim to create in my coaching.
I’m curious: What does optimism mean to you?
