If you’ve ever felt like you’re juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle and balancing a teetering stack of plates – trying not to let anything crash to the ground – then you know exactly what it’s like when life refuses to slow down, no matter how much you need it to. The circus act of daily demands can be relentless, and sometimes, the only thing you can do is keep moving gracefully from one responsibility to the next.
Let me offer a glimpse into my own reality, not as a lament, but as a candid look at how life sometimes stacks up. My partner recently underwent surgery, and while we prepared as best we could, the complexities of daily life pressed on. I’m grateful to work full-time from home, even from abroad, which allows me to support my partner. We’re staying in my partner’s parents’ apartment, a generous gesture that adds another layer of responsibility, as I want to honor their trust by caring for the space. So, my days are filled with grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, dishes, and prepping meals. Add to that caring for our lively dog, Mika, with walks and attention, plus carving out time for my own training. These duties don’t stop but rather define the rhythm of my present life.
Through this whirlwind, I’ve discovered the importance of – as I call them – “tiny treatments”, small, intentional rituals that restore my balance and help keep those proverbial plates from tumbling. Here are the practices that make the biggest difference for me:
Gratitude, first and foremost: I consciously notice the gifts in my situation: waking up in my childhood dream country, witnessing breathtaking sunrises before work, the flexibility of remote work, and the generosity of family offering us their home.
Mindful mornings: I dedicate around 15 minutes in the morning – usually negotiated with Mika – for kind meditation to wake my mind, gentle stretches to energize my body, and soaking in the beauty of the sunrise as Mika explores outdoors.
Running as renewal: my runs are more than exercise. They're a reset button, a chance to clear my mind, enjoy the sun, and fuel my motivation with small success.
Long walks, fresh inspiration: when Mika and I venture to the woods, she gets her chance to sniff and discover, while I refill my spirit with fresh air and listen to an inspiring podcast that sparks ideas and encouragement.
Shower resets: I “steal” 4-5 minutes in the shower to consciously relax, focus on my breath, and gently restore my nervous system.
Intentional connection: throughout the day, I check in with my partner, sharing love and asking if there’s anything I can do. These moments nurture our partnership and teamwork.
Moments of togetherness: most evenings, we find time on the couch to unwind together, sharing conversations and quiet company. We also plan meals together, turning routine into connection.
These tiny treatments are not extravagant, but they are the everyday practices that keep me balanced, help me recharge, and sustain my energy. It’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting for big solutions, a summer vacation, a free weekend, a perfect routine to rescue us from overwhelm. But real balance is crafted in the consistent, gentle rituals of daily life.
So, here is how I see: Waiting for the summer holiday to restore and recharge yourself is not a long-term solution. Especially when it's only March and the days feel as full as ever. Instead, we can choose to honor the tiny treatments that bring calm and resilience into our ordinary moments.
I invite you to reflect on your own balancing act: What are your tiny treatments? How do you keep your plates spinning when life gets overwhelming? Let’s share and inspire each other – one small practice at a time.
